Who among us has ever walked around an attic sale, taking in the familiar smells while casually glancing at and touching objects, or looked behind the doors of a beautiful grandmother’s linen cupboard to see the dazzling whiteness, the softness of old sheet piles, in linen but more often made of hemp?

Textured and slightly rough to the touch, but of a unique suppleness, the material seems to have endured generations, serving the lives of numerous people. Here is the newborn baby rolled into the sheet from the bottom drawer, and scrubbed at the washtub with cloth once used as a shirt by his grandfather. This one was tailored into the same piece as the little girl’s party dresses or the loyal cook’s apron. And the old bolster pillowcase ended up in her hands when patched up again to make tea towels, wiping with no sign of wearing out.
