Shopping is a pleasant and fine activity, but more and more people want to understand the provenance of what they are buying, i.e. the sources, production processes and trading origins of goods. Although a suitable criterion for initial comparison, the ratio of price versus quality is no longer sufficient. We consumers, together with distributors and retailers are responsible for the unacceptable pressure placed upon suppliers, who are often from the developing world. We all realize the planet’s resources are limited and we understand that ethical principles should take higher priority than they have in the past
Consumers possess the power to ensure these issues are addressed. Why not put this purchasing power to good use by inverting the power struggle between supply and demand, and by diversifying the sources of distribution? |
