Useful hemp

The plant is valuable in many ways, and good use can be made with all parts of the plants. The fibres made of cellulose are used in both the paper and textile industry. The seed is used for food quality oil, flour and tea, cosmetics and bird feed.

The centre of the stalk possesses similar texture to wood and may be utilised for animal litter, mixed compost, the building and other industries (e.g. automobile interiors).

The advantages of hemp in healthy insulation and building materials (plywood) which are ecological are being revealed. Utilised in eco friendly buildings, it is a biodegradable material, has recognised technical qualities and does not exhaust resources.

Its utilisation may allow the development of local resources as well as local workforce. Finally, its culture and treatment contribute to French employment and reduces oil-based pollution. The time has come to turn to promising natural resources, and the use of hemp, inherited from our ancestors, could well be the answer to many of our current and future needs, without damaging the environment or wasting energy.

At the end of 2005, France was the world’s number one producer of hemp with 50% (9100 hectares) of worldwide production.
